A Beautiful & Important Vase of ovoid shape by Jean Despres.
Pewter with fine martele work finish, four double ring motifs to the collar, shallow foot with circular plate base.
The pieces crafted in Pewter are Jean Despres earlist creations, displaying a striking purity of design & restrained decoration, although utilising a simple base metal they are objects of great sophistication & beauty.
I have included in the list of images an original drawing by Despres which shows a proposed display of his pieces at the Salon de Tuileries in 1948.This is particulary interesting as this piece, shown centrally on the second shelf dates from the 1930s & it is known that Jean Despres liked to include pieces across his whole career rather than just his most recent creations when exhibiting his work.
Script Signature to the base.Original patination.
Height 24cm,Diameter of the base plate 16.5cm.
